*According to Pythagoras, the science of numbers was the basis for all things “13 is the most enigmatic of all numbers, as it is the number of transformation.”

*It was one of the most revered numbers in the Ancient tribal and indigenous cultures, as it is the number of the months in the lunar cycle of the year. This meant that it represented death and re-birth at the same time; as the 13thmoon closed one year it also opened another. (both Muslim and Jewish calendars still operate on this 13 moon calendar for their religious holidays). As such, the symbolic meaning of number thirteen deals with moon associations such as: femininity, magic, psyche and emotion.

* The Celts honored the 13 lunar system by also associating it with their sacredness of trees. (13 sacred trees as shown in the wheel here). It was under penalty of death to disturb/cut down one of these trees!

*13 zodiac signs, including the sign Ophiuchus (the Serpent Bearer) being the one that represents great knowledge.

*The Ancient Egyptians believed that there are twelve steps on the ladder to eternal life and knowledge and to take the thirteenth step meant going through death into everlasting life, thus the thirteenth step it is said, that the soul reaches the source of itself and attains spiritual completion.
13 is the number they associated with immortality.

Thus the story of Isis and Osiris, The symbolism of thirteen comes into play when we learn of Osiris (the Egyptian god of life, death and powerful solar symbol) was murdered by his brother Set. Isis, Osiris’ wife collected his body with intent to restore Osiris back to life. However, Set stole Osiris’ body and cut it into fourteen pieces and scattered them about the earth. Isis continued her quest to revive her beloved, but could only reclaim thirteen of the fourteen body parts (the fourteenth part being Osiris’ penis which interestingly fell into the Nile and was eaten by a school of fish which are also symbolic).

This tale symbolically implies that the meaning of number thirteen is the precursor to completion.

* 13 years old signifies the of coming of age

*In the Old Testament in the second book of Moses, one can study the 13 attributes of God (Exodus34: 6-7).

*In the New Testament, we find that the Master Christ gathered 12 apostles around him: 12 + 1 = 13.

*13 holds great significance according to Kabbalah.

The Hebrew words for “love” (ahava), “care” (de’aga), and “one” (echad) all have the numerical value of 13.

* In the Book of Numbers in the Old Testament, we find that there were 13 tribes of Israel, not 12. Most teachers speak of the 12 tribes of Israel, overlooking the tribe of Levi, who, as the Guardians of the Temple Mysteries, were not counted in later years.

*In ancient Greece Zeus was counted as the thirteenth, and most powerful god. Here the associations of Zeus give the number thirteen symbolic meanings such as: totality, completion, power, realization and attainment.

*Both the Aztec and the Mayan Calendars honored the cycles by the concurrence of a cycle of 1 through 13 (moons) and within is a cycle of 20 days, which were named with totems (example: no 5 = Snake – Coatl). The calendric year began with the first appearance of the Pleiades asterism in the east immediately before the dawn light.

*In the language of the Tarot, the number thirteen is represented in the Death card, which is symbolic of Transition, Change, Inevitability

*In music, the chromatic scale is composed of 13 notes – 8 whole notes, which are represented by the white keys on the piano, and 5 half tones, which are represented by the black keys. The 13th note becomes the first and last note of the octave.

* The image of The Flower of Life, contains all of sacred geometry, the geometrical patterns that Nature uses to create everything in this reality. One of the images contained within the flower of life is known as the fruit of life. 13 systems of information come out of the fruit of life. Each of these 13 systems produces a set of geometries that delineate and describe in detail every single aspect of our reality

You get to these 13 systems of information by combining female energy with male energy. In sacred geometry, curved lines are female while straight lines are male. One of these thirteen systems is created by connecting the centers of all the spheres in the fruit of life. If you do, you come up with a figure known as Metatron’s Cube.

*The number of colonies that formed the United States. The original flag had thirteen stars, one for each state. New stars have since been added whenever a new state joins the union, but the idea of adding stripes for new states was soon dropped, so the American flag to this day has thirteen horizontal stripes: six white ones and seven red ones. But the number thirteen always became a number related to the country’s symbols. The Great Seal (below) is one perfect example, as there have been thirteen:

13 Stripes on the Seal’s emblem
13 Leaves on the olive branch (as well as thirteen olives)
13 Arrows in the other grip
13 number of letters in “E Pluribus Unum”
13 number of letters in “Annuit cœptis”
13Breast coverts on the bird “Great Seal of the United States”

* 13 is The number of guns in a gun salute to U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps Major Generals, and Navy and Coast Guard Rear Admirals Upper Half.

Now you may have always heard of 13 as being ‘unlucky’ or a ‘bad omen’, right? A number becoming a taboo seems like a strange concept, but indeed it is true in the case of the classic “Unlucky 13“. The rise of power of the Catholic Church saw times where old customs and spiritual practices of the Indigenous and Esoteric traditions (all of which were nature based) became heretic. A fear of the number 13 was instilled. (To this day, The fear of the number 13 still exists and actually has a medical term, called Triskaidekaphobia.)
Consequently, as the number 13 also corresponds to the sacred feminine energy, a fear of the power of women became widely instilled during these times, and led to tens of thousands of murders of women during the dark ages and the rise of Patriarchy in Church and Politics up to present day.

I hope that by reading this, you enjoy knowing a little more about the power of 13 and what it simply yet supremely means – Like the image of the Flower of Life, We are all connected, All as One and One is All we are.
